Since 1960, Catella has been growing rice in the heart of the Piedmontese Baraggia, in an area of several hectares between the provinces of Biella and Vercelli.
A small company that has always been characterised by simplicity and seriousness, favouring local cultures to protect the biodiversity of the land and defend traditional family farming.

In order to enhance the typicality of the Baraggia rice, they have chosen organic production and the cleaning is done by hand by a very important figure, the mondina.

The cleaning of the rice fields consists of uprooting the wild rice or crodo rice, a weed that suffocates and damages the crop because it grows more vigorously and overgrows the rice crop, causing a loss of productivity of up to 25% of the harvest.
The mondine not only clean the rice fields, but also select the rice that will be used as seed for the following year, which must be clean and perfect; they are indispensable for traditional and organic production.

Riso di Baraggia Biellese e Vercellese DOP is the first and only DOP rice in Italy, a guarantee of local origin and traceability from the field to the table.
